Spin Charts Path to Carbon Negative: Begins Electrifying Operations in Two U.S. Cities and Contributes Revenue to Support Carbon Removal Tech through Partnership with Stripe Climate
- First U.S. Micromobility Company to Electrify its Operations in San Francisco, CA and Washington, D.C.
- Leverages Battery Electric Vans to Move E-scooters from the Warehouse to the Streets
- Achieves Carbon Neutral Local Operations for 2020
- Contributes Portion of Revenue to Stripe Climate to Support Carbon Removal Technologies
[SAN FRANCISCO — APRIL 20, 2021] — Spin, the micromobility unit of Ford Motor Company, today announced the company will begin electrifying its operations vehicles by introducing full sized electric vans in San Francisco, CA and Washington, D.C. in April 2021 to celebrate Earth Month. This is a continuation of the company’s efforts to operate sustainably by measuring, reducing, and offsetting its carbon footprint. Today’s announcement also includes the achievement of carbon neutral local operations (covering all of Spin’s Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions) for 2020. An important component of Spin’s carbon neutrality is the successful transition to using 100% renewable electricity in its global operations through direct renewable energy purchases and renewable energy certificates (RECs).
Going forward, Spin will expand its carbon accounting and carbon neutrality to cover all emissions across its value chain, and regularly update its emissions calculations. It will also continue to offset all emissions it was unable to reduce or avoid. This will ensure rides from 2020 onwards are carbon neutral. The company is also taking further steps to meet its carbon negative goal by 2025 by contributing a portion of its revenue to Stripe Climate to support companies that are building carbon removal technologies.
“We want to offer the cleanest form of transportation possible to cities,” said Derrick Ko, CEO and Co-Founder of Spin. “That means we can’t cut corners when it comes to sustainability. I’m proud of our team for proposing bold initiatives and offering creative solutions to reduce our carbon footprint.”
Although few commercial electric vehicles options are currently available in the U.S, Ford-owned Spin is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable operations and stepping ahead of its competitors by fully electrifying its operations vehicles in two of the largest micromobility programs in the U.S. by the end of 2021.
“Outside of manufacturing, operations activities — picking up and deploying e-scooters — make up a majority of a micromobility company’s carbon footprint. Combined with the use of 100 percent renewable electricity, the full electrification of an operations fleet will eliminate fuel use and reduce the vast majority of Scope 1 and 2 emissions,” Holly Gordon, Vice President of Policy at Spin. “I’m particularly excited about the portfolio of electric vehicles, such as electric low speed vehicles and e-cargo bikes, which will allow us to operate sustainably and efficiently in cities.”
Spin is also announcing that its local operations, which covers its warehouses, operations vehicles, and charging of scooters, are now carbon neutral for 2020. The company’s carbon calculations and carbon neutrality have been verified by an independent third party, Agendi, following the rigorous, globally recognized PAS 2060 Carbon Neutrality specification developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI). Now, when riders take a Spin, they can be confident that their trips are carbon neutral because of the actions that Spin has taken to measure, reduce, and offset the company’s operational emissions.
Spin is also contributing a portion of its revenues to Stripe Climate this year to support innovative companies whose technologies can permanently remove carbon from the Earth’s atmosphere. “As part of our sustainability commitment, we are pushing to be carbon negative,” said Hui Wen Chan, Director of Sustainability at Spin. “Carbon removal will be a critical tool in the fight against climate change. We are excited to participate in Stripe Climate to help collectively scale the solutions needed to meet the world’s climate goals.”
